NHMRC established the Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) Advisory Committee under section 39 of the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992 to advise the NHMRC Chief Executive Officer on the current needs for research and clinical guidance on ME/CFS. The Committee finalised its report in late April 2019.

Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe gastroenteritis in children worldwide. In Australia during the 20th century, it was a major cause of infant death. NHMRC-funded researchers at The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne (RCH) and the University of Melbourne discovered rotavirus. Along with researchers at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) they made important contributions to the development of vaccines against it, leading to significant decreases in hospitalisation for infant diarrhoea globally.

A Targeted Call for Research (TCR) is a one-time request for grant applications to address a specific health issue where there is a significant research knowledge gap or unmet need. A TCR specifies the scope and objectives of the research to be proposed, application requirements and procedures, and the review criteria to be applied in the evaluation of applications submitted in response to the TCR.
