Members of NHMRC’s Dietary Guidelines Expert Committee (the Expert Committee) have been appointed to support the review of evidence and update of the 2013 Australian Dietary Guidelines.

NHMRC has commenced a revision of the 2013 Australian Dietary Guidelines (the 2013 Guidelines) to reflect the best available evidence. To support the revision process, NHMRC has established a committee of experts to provide advice and expertise in reviewing the evidence and revising the 2013 Guidelines (including guidance for older Australians).

Terms of reference

The Expert Committee has been established under the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992, with member appointments made by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NHMRC.

The Expert Committee reports to the CEO of NHMRC, through the Dietary Guidelines Team and works collaboratively with NHMRC’s Dietary Guidelines Governance Committee (the Governance Committee) and any experts contracted by NHMRC to support the revision process.

The Expert Committee will:

  1. Prioritise the topic areas for review.
  2. Advise on the development and conduct of the evidence reviews, including providing comments on draft evidence evaluation reports and evidence statements.
  3. Consider evidence submitted by NHMRC stakeholders relating to the review topics.
  4. Advise on updates to the 2013 Guidelines based on the evidence, ensuring an Australian context.
  5. Advise on development of a consultation strategy.
  6. Give due consideration to feedback received from public and targeted consultations.
  7. Address any other matter requested by the CEO of NHMRC on this project.

The term of the Expert Committee commenced on 1 June 2021 and is scheduled to conclude on 6 March 2027.

The development of consumer communication tools and implementation plans are outside the scope of the Expert Committee. NHMRC will consult with consumers, health professionals, policy makers, educators and industry later in the review process to ensure the revised guidelines are easy to understand and adopt and are well communicated to Australia’s diverse communities.

Communiqué

To support transparency in the revision of the 2013 Guidelines, the Expert Committee will release a communiqué after each of its meetings, to provide a summary of meeting outcomes.

Available communiques are provided below:

Appointment process

In November 2020, NHMRC issued an Expression of Interest, seeking candidates for appointment to the Expert Committee.

Individuals were invited to self-nominate and submit an expression of interest application for appointment to the Expert Committee. Further information on the Expression of Interest requirements is available in the Downloads section below.

Applications were considered via the following process:

  1. Applications were reviewed to ensure they met the submission requirements and selection criteria.
  2. Applicants who clearly met the selection criteria were asked to disclose relevant interests based on a Disclosure of Interest form developed by the Governance Committee.
  3. Disclosed interests were assessed by the Governance Committee for actual or perceived conflicts of interest in accordance with the NHMRC Policy on the Disclosure of Interests Requirements for Prospective and Appointed NHMRC Committee Members (2019).
  4. Applicants were shortlisted based on expertise and disclosed interests also balancing geographic location, career stage and gender.
  5. A shortlist of applicants was presented to the CEO of NHMRC for consideration and appointment.
