The twelfth meeting of the National Health and Medical Research Council’s (NHMRC) Dietary Guidelines Expert Committee (Expert Committee) was held in December 2024 by videoconference.

Evidence to inform the Australian Dietary Guidelines

At the previous meeting the Expert Committee selected systematic reviews, from the updated literature search for the broader Guidelines (all populations) and for older adults, to progress to risk of bias assessment.

In this meeting, the Expert Committee discussed the results of the risk of bias assessments for systematic reviews which may answer the priority research questions for older adults. They selected systematic reviews to progress to final PI/ECO (Population, Intervention/Exposure, Comparator and Outcome) extraction for older adults. Systematic reviews to progress to PI/ECO extraction from the updated literature search for the broader Guidelines will be selected out of session.

After selecting relevant systematic reviews for older adults to address priority research questions where possible, the Expert Committee considered potential evidence gaps for older adults where new evidence reviews may be commissioned. The Expert Committee agreed to formulate research questions out of session.

Next meeting

The next Expert Committee meeting is planned for early 2025.
