Guideline development process
There are many steps involved when developing guidelines with engagement from a variety of different stakeholders. They are developed by multidisciplinary committees that follow a rigorous evidence-based approach. They are informed by the judgement of evidence by experts, and the views of consumers, community groups and other people affected by the guidelines.
This detailed process has been outlined below in a flow diagram.

Quality Checks
To support the development of the highest quality public health guidelines and advice, NHMRC has robust processes in place to manage conflict of interest and to use recognised tools to assess the evidence for quality and bias. There are a number of quality check points during the development of public health guidelines or advice which ensures that the process follows transparent development and decision making processes.
The quality check points are outlined below in a flow diagram.

Evidence review process
NHMRC has rigorous standards in place to ensure that guidelines and public health advice are high quality and based on the best available scientific evidence.
NHMRC follows a robust and transparent development and decision making process. This involves determining the questions we want to answer, and then planning the evidence search, analysis and reporting. The evidence is then searched and selected before assessing the evidence for bias. The body of evidence will then be described and assessed for certainty, before the results and reporting is presented.
This process has been outlined below in a flow diagram to show the steps involved in reviewing evidence.
