Draft guidelines
NHMRC is currently updating the draft Guidelines. Please note that the NHMRC Guidelines for Managing Risks in Recreational Water (2008) remain current until the updated version is finalised and published on the NHMRC website. This is because NHMRC advice might change depending on input from the public consultation process and whether new information becomes available before final publication.
Public consultation on the draft Australian Recreational Water Quality Guidelines was open from 15 January to 27 February 2026. The revised Guidelines are anticipated to be published in late 2026 pending advice from NHMRC Council and final CEO approval.
