NHMRC opened a Targeted Call for Research (TCR) into Dementia in Indigenous Australians on 19 April 2017 which closed on 31 May 2017.
This TCR was conducted in conjunction with NHMRC’s National Institute of Dementia Research (NNIDR). The aim of implementing this call is to provide funding for culturally appropriate research that specifically address dementia in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and the impact on their families and carers.
Research proposals submitted through this TCR could include research into:
- Risk factors and dementia prevention strategies in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
- Developing culturally appropriate and sensitive diagnostic tools for the diagnosis of dementia in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
- Developing best practice models of care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians living with dementia, and their families and carers.
Expected outcomes from funded grants will be:
- The generation of high quality information on dementia in Indigenous Australians that translates directly to improved health outcomes.
- Improved quality of life for Indigenous Australians with dementia, their family, carers and communities, as defined by Indigenous Australian people.
