The Embryo Research Licensing Committee (ERLC) maintains an online database of general and mitochondrial donation licences.
ERLC is required by section 29 of the Research Involving Human Embryos Act 2002 (RIHE Act) to maintain an online, public database containing following information on each general and mitochondrial donation licence.
The database includes information on:
- the activities authorised by a licence
- the number of human embryos, eggs, or zygotes to be created and/or used in a licensed activity
- the standard and special conditions a licence is subject to
- who a licence is issued to and its term.
Licence conditions
Licences are subject to standard and special conditions, these are legal requirements that must be followed by the licence holder and other authorised persons who carry out the licensed activities. Licences are also subject to the provisions of the RIHE Act and the Prohibition of Human Cloning for Reproduction Act 2002.
Standard conditions apply to all licences, unless they are specifically excluded by a Special condition. They are outlined in the RIHE Act (sections 24, 28N, 28P, 28Q) and are available in the downloads section.
Special conditions regulate the specific activities authorised under each licence. This may include information such as the number of excess ART embryos, eggs or zygotes authorised for use, the number of other embryos authorised to be created or used, sites where the authorised activities will occur, and any other conditions determined by ERLC.
