The Prohibition of Human Cloning for Reproduction Act 2002 and the Research involving Human Embryos Act 2002 were introduced in response to community concerns, including ethical concerns, about scientific developments in relation to human reproduction and the use of human embryos. These Acts prohibit certain unacceptable practices, including human cloning for reproduction, and regulates certain uses of excess human embryos created through Assisted Reproduction Technology.
The NHMRC Embryo Research Licensing Committee issues licences for research involving human embryos, and monitors compliance with the legislation.
This information kit replaces the one published in 2008. The information that was previously included in the Apprendixes of the 2008 version can be found on the Information for Applications and Information for Licence Holders pages.
