This Targeted Call for Research (TCR) into Hearing Health 2021: Evidence-based support services is a component of the $21.2 million 2020–21 Budget measure to support initiatives under the Preventative Health – Implementation of Roadmap for Hearing Health. A total of $7.3 million over 3 years was allocated to hearing research through this TCR.

NHMRC opened this TCR on 13 October 2021 and applications closed on 8 December 2021.

This TCR aimed to strengthen the evidence base for hearing support services that can adapt to client needs and technological changes as well as develop strategies to improve healthy hearing habits, especially in vulnerable populations.

Successful applications for this TCR aimed to:

  • determine best practice population-based screening and intervention options.
  • identify suitable methods to accurately measure the prevalence and severity of hearing loss in the Australian community.

Outcomes from funded applications are expected to:

  • inform development and delivery of hearing health services in the future
  • improve the evidence base of strategies that encourage and promote behaviours that preserve and protect hearing health, especially in vulnerable populations
  • assure providers and consumers that the hearing program support services are based on the best available evidence to adapt to client needs and technology changes
