MRFF – Emerging Priorities and Consumer Driven Research Initiative - 2024 Improving the Health Outcomes of People with Intellectual Disability Grant Opportunity

The Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) – 2024 Improving the Health Outcomes of People with Intellectual Disability Grant Opportunity will support research that:

  • Stream 1 (Targeted Call for Research): conduct large-scale, multidisciplinary projects, in partnership with the health and disability sector and people with lived experience, to develop, optimise and/or evaluate person-centred approaches for preventive health care for people with intellectual disability.
    Funding in Stream 1 is available as follows:
    • Topic A: projects that focus on oral health  
    • Topic B: projects that focus on other types of preventive health.
  • Stream 2 (Targeted Call for Research): develop and/or evaluate approaches to support health care transitions across life stages for people with intellectual disability, through co-design with the health and disability sector and people with lived experience.
    Funding in Stream 2 is available as follows:
    • Topic A: projects that focus on the health care transition from paediatric to adult care
    • Topic B: projects that focus on the health care transition from adult to aged care.  
    • Topic C: projects where the organisation undertaking the majority of the research is located, and the Chief Investigator A, 50% or more of all Chief Investigators, and all research participants are primarily resident, in a regional, rural, remote or very remote area according to the Modified Monash Model (MM2-7).
  • Stream 3 (Targeted Call for Research): develop, optimise and/or implement screening or diagnostic tools for mental health and/or physical health issues in people with intellectual disability.

The anticipated outcome/s of the research is to improve the health and wellbeing of Australians by:

  • Stream 1 (Targeted Call for Research): improving understanding and uptake of preventive health care for people with intellectual disability.
  • Stream 2 (Targeted Call for Research): improving understanding of, and access to, appropriate health care across the lifespan for people with intellectual disability.
  • Stream 3 (Targeted Call for Research): supporting the improved identification of health issues in people with intellectual disability.

This grant opportunity is being administered by NHMRC on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care.
