Cancer Australia – 2024 Improving First Nations Cancer Outcomes: Partnerships for Cancer Research Grant Opportunity will support research to:

  • strengthen cancer research to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health  
  • build the capacity of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research sector now and into the future, including through mentorship and leadership opportunities
  • elevate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led research, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership, genuine co-design, co-authorship, collaboration, and partnerships
  • empower and enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander frameworks, research methodologies, and data sovereignty
  • elevate community-driven research and the culturally safe inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers, families, and communities in cancer research.

The anticipated outcome's of the research is to:

  • improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by generating translational knowledge to inform inclusive and equitable cancer care
  • build research capacity and capability of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cancer workforce
  • establish governance arrangements that enable shared decision-making, local leadership, community ownership of intellectual property, and community-led utilisation of data
  • increase engagement of communities in the co-design of research, to ensure there is a clear benefit to the community at all stages
  • increase research partnerships and collaborations between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, health services, and academic institutions.
