The Nutrient Reference Values outline the levels of intake of essential nutrients considered to be adequate to meet the known nutritional needs of practically all healthy people for prevention of deficiency states and toxicity from excess. The document can be used by health professionals to assess the likelihood of inadequate or excess intake in individuals or groups of people.

The NRVs are reviewed in an ongoing manner as resources allow. The NRVs were originally published in 2006. Revised recommendations for fluoride and sodium were published in 2017.

The supporting material including the Methodological Framework, literature reviews and evidence summaries were authored by the Australian Government Department of Health and New Zealand Ministry of Health.
