$11 million to build and grow on Australian research in climate change and health
On Wednesday 29 January 2025, the Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, the Hon Ged Kearney MP, announced funding outcomes for the Targeted Call for Research: climate-related health impacts and effective interventions to improve health outcomes 2024.
Eleven research teams will share in almost $11 million in funding to conduct innovative, groundbreaking research that improves our understanding of the current and future impacts of climate change on the health and wellbeing of Australians and on health system demand.

Public consultation webinar: Clinical Practice Guidelines and Principles of Care for People with Dementia
Monash University (the developer) is updating the 2016 Clinical Practice Guidelines and Principles of Care for People with Dementia. The developer is seeking NHMRC approval under section 14A of the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992 for the guidelines.
The developer is gathering feedback on the development of resources for the guidelines and is inviting people interested in and impacted by dementia to join a public consultation webinar.
The webinar is scheduled for Thursday 27 February 2025 from 16:00–17:00 AEDT. Register for this webinar on Zoom.
Institutional Annual Compliance Report survey
The 2024 Institutional Annual Compliance Report (IACR) survey opens on Monday 3 February 2025 and will close on Friday 14 March 2025 at 17:00 AEDT.
All Administering Institutions (AI) are required to respond to the IACR survey to retain NHMRC AI status. The survey details ongoing compliance with the NHMRC Funding Agreement and other relevant policies for the previous year.

Score descriptor and research impact update for the Investigator Grants 2026 round
NHMRC recently closed its public consultation on proposed updates to the Investigator and Synergy Grants score descriptors and research impact assessment criteria.
NHMRC is currently analysing the outcomes of this consultation and will provide revised updates to the NHMRC score descriptor working group in mid-February for discussion.
The proposed updates will be presented to NHMRC’s Research Committee and other relevant committees that provide advice to NHMRC.
Synergy Grants 2025
Synergy Grants support outstanding multidisciplinary teams of investigators to work together to answer major questions that cannot be answered by a single investigator.
Key dates for 2025:
- Applications open on Wednesday 5 February 2025
- Minimum data due by Wednesday 5 March 2025 at 17:00 AEDT
- Applications close on Wednesday 2 April 2025 at 17:00 AEDT.

Applicants are reminded that only applicants who completed minimum data by the due date can submit an application. It is also the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they meet all eligibility requirements, including limits on the number of times a person can be named as a Chief Investigator on applications submitted to a grant opportunity.
Applicants should ensure:
- their Sapphire account is active or access to Sapphire has been requested,
- their organisation is an approved MRFF Eligible Organisation before the close date, and
any intended participating institutions are listed in Sapphire or request that a new participating institution be added by emailing help@nhmrc.gov.au, including the institution's website address (URL) and ABN (if applicable).
