NHMRC Speaking of Science – emerging international trends in sex and gender science with Dr Cara Tannenbaum
When it comes to our health and wellbeing, differences between sex and gender matter and the more consideration that we give to these differences, the more we can improve health outcomes for all Australians.
Having worked on implementation of sex and gender research funding policies in Canada, the United States, the Netherlands and Europe, Dr Cara Tannenbaum is joining us to share the lessons learned and advise on best practices for Australia. This webinar falls under our Speaking of Science series and will take place on Tuesday 26 November 2024 from 11:00AM to 12:00PM AEDT.
Dr Tannenbaum will discuss the emerging international trends in sex and gender science, coinciding with the recent release of the NHMRC–MRFF joint Statement on Sex, Gender, Variations of Sex Characteristics and Sexual Orientation in Health and Medical Research, an important deliverable in NHMRC’s progress towards gender equity.
There will be an opportunity to engage and ask questions of our inspiring international guest speaker through a thought-provoking Q&A session.
Register for the webinar on Eventbrite.
Please note that this webinar will be recorded and published to NHMRC’s website afterwards and if you have any questions, contact media@nhmrc.gov.au.

Centering Indigenous research excellence now and into the future
NHMRC is committed to improving the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through funding research of the highest quality, integrity and excellence.
NHMRC will pilot a question in our 2025 Centres of Research Excellence (CRE) grant opportunity, asking applicants to answer how their research application benefits Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander health and contributes to Closing the Gap targets.
Responses will be considered by peer reviewers in the overall assessment of the application, using the existing scheme-specific assessment criteria in the context of the relevant field of research.
The 2025 CRE grant round will close on Wednesday 4 December 2024.

Forecast opportunity: Targeted Call for Research on addressing the needs of people with high healthcare service utilisation 2024
NHMRC is considering opening a grant opportunity in late 2024 that aims to address the needs of people with high healthcare service utilisation. There is lack of research on the experience, needs and health care journey of people with high healthcare service utilisation from a consumer perspective and the key factors that lead to frequent use of health services.
The proposed opportunity will facilitate research that will improve understanding of the patient journey, where the critical issues are for people to access timely and appropriate care in diverse geographic locations and in different sectors of the healthcare services.
Full details of this forecast opportunity are available on GrantConnect. Interested parties can watch the forecast opportunity (by clicking the star icon) to be alerted via email of any updates to the notice, including publication of grant guidelines.
