Professor Rachelle Buchbinder is a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Senior Principal Research Fellow. She is the Director and Professor in the Monash University Department of Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine since 2007. Professor Rachelle Buchbinder's clinical practice is in conjunction with research involving multidisciplinary projects relating to arthritis and musculoskeletal condition.

Professor Rachelle Buchbinder: So I’m a rheumatologist and a clinical epidemiologist and my field is mainly in identifying what works and translating that evidence into practice for musculoskeletal conditions.

We have an NHMRC program grant that is looking at reducing over testing and over treatment, and this is a problem not just because they are necessary and costly,

but in some instances they also harm people.

We just received a NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence Award.

For the first time we’ve got funding to capacity build, to make sure that there are enough researchers in this field, to also make sure that we’re answering the most important questions.

So the possibilities of these avenues is that we actually improve the health of the population worldwide,

and that we save valuable resources being wasted at the moment and that could be directed into more research and better treatments for people with musculoskeletal conditions.
