Program Grants: Interview Dates and FAQ page

Interviews for the current Program Grants application round are now expected to take place in the week commencing Monday 10 November 2008, to avoid an overlap with the 2008 Australian Health and Medical Research Congress.

The Program Grant Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page includes information on quanta rates.

NHMRC and the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) consultation process

NHMRC is working with the Australian Research Council (ARC) to support the ERA consultation process around the use of research publications data.

As each Higher Education Provider (HEP) is allowed only a single submission to the consultation process, the NHMRC encourages all NHMRC-funded research staff at the relevant institutions to be involved in this process within their institutions.

NHMRC/ARC Research Administrators' Seminar

The 2008 Seminar will be held in the Bradman Theatrette at the National Convention Centre, Canberra from 6 - 7 November.

Revision of the NHMRC Dietary Guidelines

The NHMRC is calling for tenders to review the scientific literature relating to:

(a) the food, diet, health, disease inter-relationship for different population subgroups;
(b) food, dietary patterns, nutrition and environmental sustainability; and
(c) national and international peer reviewed food selection guides and national data on nutrient intakes. 

Review results will contribute to the NHMRC Dietary Guidelines.  

Individuals, organisations, and consortiums who wish to submit a tender must address the evaluation criteria in the Request for Tender application.

NHMRC activities in genetics

Direct-to-consumer DNA tests: marketing hype or medical breakthrough?
The NHMRC and the Australian Law Reform Commission will co-host a public meeting with special guest Ms Bernie Hobbs, ABC TV's The New Inventors  on 7 August (6.00-9.00 pm), State Library of NSW, Sydney.

Genetics testing symposium
The issues and concerns raised at this public meeting will be addressed at the NHMRC’s Genetic Testing Conference to be held on 16 October in Canberra. The Conference will explore key contemporary issues in DNA testing, including the protection of the community and preventive genetic-based strategies to ensure appropriate health care delivery. Attendance at the Conference is by invitation.

Genetic information sheets
The NHMRC has developed a series of information sheets on contemporary issues in genetics. 

Podcast: a conversation with Professor Fiona Stanley

NHMRC Supporting Australian and New Zealand Health and Medical Research Students

This week NHMRC sponsored the Australian Medical Students Association’s (AMSA) Research Poster competition as a part of the 2008 AMSA convention. This year the competition attracted 41 entrants from Australian and New Zealand medical research students. Professor James Best, Chair of the NHMRC Research Committee relished the task of judging the top 15 dynamic entries.
