Report on the 170th session of the NHMRC

The National Health and Medical Research Council met on 24 April 2008. Agenda items included the 2020 Summit, Australian Government health initiatives, preventative health, obesity and nutrition, and research in the clinical environment. More information is available in the Communiqué.

Program Grants timetable changes

Applications for the next round of Program Grants open shortly for funding commencing in 2010. Program Grant holders in their fourth year of funding in 2008 will need to apply in this round if they wish to have the opportunity to maintain continuity of funding. The time between the opening of applications and commencement of funding has been increased so that applicants can be advised of outcomes before the start of the 2009 Project Grants round.

From 2009 there will be only one round per year, in the first half of the year.

NHMRC Training (Postdoctoral) Fellowships

Applications opened on May 2 for NHMRC Training (Postdoctoral) Fellowships, including the Australia-China Exchange Fellowships, for funding commencing in 2009.

Partnership training awards

Partnership training awards, including Post Graduate Scholarships, Training (Postdoctoral) Fellowships and Career Development Awards, are offered through funding partnerships between the NHMRC and each partner organisation. They offer additional opportunities to researchers whose work is particularly relevant to the partner organisations.  Applications are assessed and evaluated in the same way as those for other Training Awards as well as being reviewed by the partner organisation/s.

European Molecular Biology Laboratory opportunities

Expressions of interest are being sought from Australian research institutions interested in hosting the NHMRC supported EMBL Group Leader.  For Further information contact Mr Michael Nutt, Director, Research Ideas Section on 02 6217 9430.

Applications for the NHMRC supported Group Leader at EMBL close on Friday 16 May 2008.  The successful applicant will be located at an EMBL site in Europe for 5 years followed by 4 years at a research institution in Australia.

Public Health Review Consultations

People with an interest in developing or using public health research are invited to contribute to the NHMRC Review of Public Health Research.  Public consultations are being held Australia wide from mid May to June and submissions can be made in writing before 30 June 2008.

Recycled Water Guidelines

The NHMRC, Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council (NRMMC) and the Environment Protection Heritage Council (EPHC) have released for public consultation the draft Australian Guidelines for Water Recycling: Managing Health and Environmental Risks (Phase 2): Stormwater Harvesting and Reuse and the Australian Guidelines for Water Recycling: Managing Health and Environmental Risks (Phase 2): Managed Aquifer Recharge.

Comment on draft Palliative Care Guidelines

Draft Guidelines for a Palliative Approach for Aged Care in the Community have been developed as a companion document to the existing Guidelines for a Palliative Approach in Residential Aged Care. They will be released for public comment on 17 May 2008.
