International Review Update:

  • Dr Elias Zerhouni (Director, US National Institutes for Health); Professor Sally Davies (Director of Research and Development, UK Department of Health); and Dr Edward Holmes (Executive Deputy Chairman of Singapore’s Biomedical Research Council) were in Australia in January for the second stage of the international review of NHMRC’s research processes.

NHMRC Researcher Forum:

  • NHMRC’s CEO, Professor Warwick Anderson will be holding open discussion sessions for the research community in March and April 2008.
  • These sessions will cover issues such as success rates in the 2007 funding round, improving peer review, supporting our health and medical researchers, the rising cost of research, supporting biomedical, clinical, public health and health services research, commercialisation of NHMRC supported research and an analysis of NHMRC supported achievements.
  • Sessions will be held in:
    • Perth 5 March
    • Newcastle 11 March
    • Darwin 8 April
    • Hobart 11 April
    • Townsville TBA
  • Further details on venues and session times will be provided in the next edition of Tracker.

Erratum - Program Grants – Application Guide

  • The NHMRC’s current Guide to Applicants and the Application for Program Grants both refer to, or request information on funding commencing in 2008.  This is incorrect and should read 2009. The following summary is where these corrections have been made:
  • Guide for Applicants:
    • The Guide refers to current and grant/funding requested for 2008. It should read 2009 as paragraphs 4.6b, 4.6c, 4.6d, 4.7b, 4.7c, 5.5b, 5.5c and 5.5d
  • Application Form:
    • The Application form refers to current and grant/funding requested for 2008.  It should read 2009 as paragraphs 4.6b, 4.6c, 4.6d, 4.7b, 4.7c, 5.5b, 5.5c and 5.5d
  • Documents on the NHMRC website have been updated to reflect these changes. Please advise relevant researchers in your institution.

Routine enquiries about Grant status

  • Researchers who are applying for NHMRC grants or who have questions about the status of awarded or ongoing grants are requested, in the first instance to contact their RAO for policy advice.  RAO’s should coordinate their institution’s queries and forward to relevant NHMRC staff.

Project Grant Review Panel Membership

  • This year, appointments to GRPs will commence after applications close on Friday 14 March 2008 and all appointments will be confirmed by Thursday 24 April 2008.

NHMRC Annual Report:

  • The 2007 NHMRC Annual Report was released on Thursday, 7 February 2008 and is available here.
  • The 2007 Annual Report is significant as it examines the performance of the NHMRC during a period of structural transformation and records our achievements during the 18 month period ending 30 June 2007.

Executive Director, National Institute of Clinical Studies, Melbourne

  • NHMRC is seeking an Executive Director to lead the NHMRC’s National Institute of Clinical Studies, which incudes s a team of 25 staff based in Melbourne working with clinicians throughout Australia in a range of priority areas. The appointee will pursue significant growth opportunities, working closely with the CEO and other areas of NHMRC and a broad range of stakeholders.

Director, Grants Management (Research Ideas), Canberra 

  • NHMRC is seeking expressions of interest from the research community, including Research Administration Officers, to manage NHMRC's Project Grants funding scheme.  This senior position offers the possibility of secondment, and an appropriate remuneration package will be negotiated.
