Applications in the 2008 NHMRC funding round: Changes to Policy Documentation
- There have been some changes to policy documents which will appear on the NHMRC web pages for the relevant funding schemes in the next few days. These include:

- All applicants should check these changes carefully before finalising their applications. Research Administration Officers will also be notified of these changes via email.

NHMRC Researcher Forums
- NHMRC CEO Professor Warwick Anderson will be holding further open discussion sessions in Perth, Newcastle, Hobart, Darwin and Townsville in 2008.
- The sessions will cover a wide range of issues including success rate in the 2007 funding round; improving peer review; supporting our health and medical researchers; the rising costs of research; supporting biomedical, clinical, public health and health services research; the commercialisation of research and an analysis of NHMRC supported research achievements.
- Details about session times and venues will be available in a future edition of NHMRC Tracker.
Research Applications into Complementary and Alternative Medicine
- The Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Grant Review Panel Meeting was recently held in Canberra. Grant Award announcements are expected to by made in early 2008.
- In 2009, CAM applications will be assessed through the Project Grants funding scheme. The closing date for all project grant applications is 14 March 2008.
Human Frontier Science Program - Research Grants Call Open
- NHMRC participates in the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP), which supports international, interdisciplinary collaborations in basic research, focusing on complex mechanisms of living organisms.
- The call for letters of intent for 2009 research grants is now open. The deadline for pre-registration is 21 March 2008 and submissions are due 2 April 2008. Application forms can be downloaded from the HFSP website www.hfsp.org/.

Request for Tender to Update the Core Food Groups (1994)
- NHMRC is seeking tenders from individuals or organisations to update the NHMRC Core Food Groups document (1994).
- This will involve translating the Nutrient Reference Values for Australia and New Zealand (2006) into quantitative and qualitative nutrition recommendations, undertaking food modelling and producing a high quality report suitable for publication.

Redesign of NHMRC Short Term Exchange Grant Scheme
- The Short Term Exchange Funding Scheme aims to enhance the research skills and profiles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and other researchers in the field of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. It provides funding for Australian researchers to undertake short study visits to New Zealand and Canada.
- The Short Term Exchange Funding Scheme is being redesigned to improve its application and approval process and to increase flexibility.
- Further details on the redesigned Scheme and the opening date for applications will be announced in early 2008.

NHMRC awards outstanding achievers in health and medical research
- Sixteen outstanding achievers have been recognised by the NHMRC for their significant contributions to health and medical research.

Advance Symposium notice - Involving People in Research
- NHMRC is a major sponsor of a national symposium to be held in Perth on 5-6 March 2008 on consumer and community participation in health and medical research. The inaugural national meeting will bring together researchers, consumers, community members and students to showcase success stories and further explore the barriers to participation.
