Program Grants for 2010
- Opening and closing dates will be advertised early in 2008.
Project Grants – Research of Strategic Importance
- NHMRC supports competitive Project Grant applications, due by 14 March 2008, in areas of strategic importance to NHMRC as described in NHMRC Strategic Plan 2007-09. In 2008, these include indigenous health, effective health care, complementary and alternative medicines, and drinking water quality. Applications that address the 2006 WHO Research Agenda for Radio Frequency Fields are also invited for separate funding consideration through NHMRC Project Grants process.
- NHMRC will advertise the opening and closing dates for the following schemes on 29 February 2008:
- Capacity Building Grants
- Centres for Clinical Research Excellence
- Development Grants
- Enabling Grants
- Short Term Exchange Studies
- NHMRC is committed to supporting indigenous health and will fund competitive grants that meet NHMRC criteria as advised by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Research Advisory Committee.
International Schemes
- In addition to the above, NHMRC will continue to fund Australian participation through the following international schemes:
- The European Union Seventh Research Framework Program
- The Human Frontiers of Science Program
- The European Molecular Biology Laboratory.
- Application dates for international schemes will be notified on the above organisations’ websites.
- NHMRC will alert the Australian health and medical research community of the dates of these and all NHMRC schemes through NHMRC Tracker and NHMRC website (www.nhmrc.gov.au).

Redesign of NHMRC Grants Schemes
Development Grant Scheme:
- A redesign of NHMRC’s Development Grant Scheme will increase its relevance to the research community and further support research commercialisation at the early proof-of concept stage.
- Further details on the redesigned Scheme will be announced in mid to late December, and applications for grants under the new policy will be advertised in the first half of 2008.
Capacity Building Grants for Population Health and Health Services Research:
- NHMRC’s Capacity Building Grants Scheme is undergoing a redesign to increase its flexibility in supporting priority areas of national research effort, including in the fields of population health and health services research.
- Further details on the redesigned Scheme will be announced in early 2008 and applications for grants under the new policy will be advertised in the first quarter of 2008.
Enabling Grants Scheme:
- NHMRC is conducting a review of its Enabling Grants Scheme to ensure that it continues to support high quality, world-class research in alignment with NHMRC’s strategic objectives.
- NHMRC will keep the research community and RAOs informed of developments through notices in tracker and the NHMRC website.

Australian Alcohol Guidelines for low-risk drinking
- The draft Australian Alcohol Guidelines for low-risk drinking public consultation stage closes soon. Submissions must be sent to nhc@nhmrc.gov.au before COB 11 December 2007.

NHMRC revamps Statistics Portal
- The NHMRC statistics portal has been updated to cover a wide range of data, statistics and information on NHMRC’s research funding activities. These data sets will be progressively updated to include 2008 research funding during the first half of 2008.
- The NHMRC statistics portal contains:
- The core NHMRC research funding dataset for 2000 to 2007, covering all new and continuing grants funded since 2000
- National health priority areas (asthma, arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular disease, injury and mental health)
- All current disease and health issues
- Burden of disease and health issues (such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research, ageing issues, Dental Health etc)
- Trend data (a statistical look at NHMRC research funding over periods ranging from 1990 through to 2007)
- The NHMRC research funding facts book (May 2007) – the key research funding statistics for the last eight years
- A history of NHMRC research activity – key people, key research and the key moments.
- NHMRC research funding retrospective 1990-1999 and 2000-2007
- The NHMRC Statistics portal is located on the NHMRC website here.
