Australia Fellowship
- Two prestigious Australia Fellowships, worth $4 million each, have been awarded to two outstanding Australian researchers — Dr Matthew Cooper, currently in the UK, who will return to Australia to work at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland, and Professor Wendy Hoy, currently Director of the Centre for Chronic Disease at the University of Queensland.
- Dr Cooper’s expertise is in antibiotic resistance, and changes in cells during the initiation and evolution of cancer. Professor Hoy has a distinguished research record in chronic disease among indigenous Australians.
Australian Alcohol Guidelines for Low Risk Drinking
- Public consultation for the draft Australian Alcohol Guidelines for Low Risk Drinking will commence on 13 October for a period of 60 days, closing on 11 December 2007. For more information go to: http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/guidelines/consult/index.htm
NHMRC’s National Institute of Clinical Studies Fellowships 2008 – progress update
- Applications are open for the 2008 NICS-TRACsa-MAC Fellowship in the uptake of evidence in the management of soft tissue injury, in particular neck pain. For further information, see NICS.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine Grant Scheme- Progress update
- NHMRC is finalising feedback from external assessors. The reviews will be available for applicant’s response from mid October to early November 2007.
It is expected that announcements will be released in early 2008.

Advance Symposium notice - Involving People in Research
- NHMRC is a major sponsor of a national symposium to be held in Perth on 5-6 March 2008 on consumer and community participation in health and medical research. The inaugural national meeting will bring together researchers, consumers, community members and students to showcase success stories and further explore the barriers to participation.
