Over $1/2 billion awarded to Australian medical researchers
- The Prime Minister announced the NHMRC's health and medical research grants totalling $561.4 million this week at the National Heart Research Institute in Sydney. Awards included:
- 2 Australia Fellowships, worth $8m
- 7 Development Grants, worth $1.6m
- 61 Equipment Grants, worth $9m
- 21 Infrastructure Grants, worth $28m
- 18 Practitioner Fellowships, worth $6.7m
- 12 Program Grants, worth $106.1m
- 664 Project Grants, worth $336.6m
- 88 Research Fellowships, worth $50.4
- 5 Special Program Grants (JDRF/NHMRC), worth $15m
- 3 Travelling Awards, worth $20k

National Ethics Application Form (NEAF) - User Testing coming soon
- To coincide with the release of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research 2007, the National Ethics Application Form (NEAF) will be updated with new references and functionality improvements. The first user testing phase will be conducted in mid-October 2007.
- If you are interested in being involved in the user testing phase of NEAF 2007, please contact NEAF Assist on neafassist@nhmrc.gov.au or 1800 823 993.
- PLEASE NOTE: The final version of NEAF 2007 will be available in January 2008, but nevertheless, we recommend that you create new ethics proposals using the test version of NEAF 2007 as soon as it becomes available in mid-October 2007.
Pre-consultation notice - Australian Alcohol Guidelines
- The NHMRC has been working to review the 2001 Australian Alcohol Guidelines. The initial revised draft is nearing completion and will be released for an extended period of public consultation in the near future. Please watch the NHMRC website for details. An email alert will be sent out to NHMRC Tracker subscribers.
2007 National Research Ethics Conference – The Ethics of Good Research
- The NHMRC, with the support of ARC, is hosting its third biennial National Research Ethics Conference on 17-18 October 2007, at the Sebel and Citigate Hotel, Albert Park, Melbourne.
- The Conference seeks to promote debate about the ethical dimensions of human research. Four symposium sessions are included, along with a Continuing Education Day to run on 16 October.

Advance Symposium notice - Involving People in Research
- NHMRC is a major sponsor of a national symposium to be held in Perth on 5-6 March 2008 on consumer and community participation in health and medical research. The inaugural national meeting will bring together researchers, consumers, community members and students to showcase success stories and further explore the barriers to participation.
- The program will include national and international speakers, showcase sessions, workshops and Posters displays. The closing date call for early abstracts is 15 October, 2007.
