How does NHMRC develop its guidelines?

NHMRC develops all of its guidelines through a 3 step process:

  1. NHMRC or a guideline developer selected by NHMRC conducts a review of the scientific evidence and produces a consultation draft of the guidelines.
  2. This draft is then made available for public consultation through the relevant NHMRC committee.
  3. A final set of guidelines are then developed and issued after a final round of consideration by NHMRC.

For example, the first draft of the Australian Alcohol Guidelines for Low Risk Drinking 2008 were made available in October 2007.  Responses were received and (as at June 2008) are currently being considered. These guidelines are at step three, nearing completion, and are expected to be released mid July 2008.
