NHMRC Academy

May 2008

The NHMRC Academy is a prestigious body of eminent researchers that enhances NHMRC's peer review processes by giving independent expert advice to NHMRC's CEO.

NHMRC relies on peer review to judge the relative quality of research proposals competing for funding and this can only occur with the assistance of the researchers who participate on the peer review panels. Good peer review relies on the fact and the perception that it is fair, informed, expert, able to identify quality and generally able to undertake the task without fear or favour.

To maintain a high level of independence and increase the transparency of the peer review process, the NHMRC Academy has been established to assist with these processes.

NHMRC Policy on Payments for Meeting Preparation – May 2009

NHMRC pays all committee members sitting fees for their attendance at committee meetings (including Grant Review Panels), in line with the Commonwealth Remuneration Tribunal determinations for Part Time Office Holders (http://www.remtribunal.gov.au/).

Between March 2006 and late 2008, NHMRC provided a “preparation fee” to some members of its peer review panels. This policy has been revised and such preparation fees will no longer be paid, since the Remuneration Tribunal prescribed daily sitting fee for a formal meeting includes a component to cover normal preparation time.

This revised policy is consistent with international best practice and the responsibilities of researchers in the NHMRC Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (2007).

CEO thanks researchers

August 2008

Each year NHMRC establishes Grant Review Panels (GRP), which are responsible for reviewing and ranking NHMRC grant applications.

Over a three week period during August 2008, NHMRC conducted a GRP for the Project Grants funding scheme of 2009.

During that time 500 assessors, all of whom are senior researchers who have received funding from NHMRC, reviewed 2,790 applications.

Applying for NHMRC grants is highly competitive and the peer review is a critical part of the process. It is an enormous task to undertake, but fundamental to ensuring the transparency, probity and fairness of our funding.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each researcher who volunteered their valuable time to review the applications.

Without their help NHMRC would not have the reputation it does for its rigorous review process.
